Detail
In the past, performances and licensed musicals from South Korea have enjoyed success, but recently, original Korean musicals have consistently gained popularity. Particularly noteworthy are instances where domestically acclaimed productions have successfully ventured abroad, marking them as successful cases of `K-Musical.` This commemorative postage series introduces four original Korean musicals that have achieved high artistic quality and commercial success. br br
Regarded as a major work in the realm of Korean original musicals, Frankenstein is an adaptation of Mary Shelley`s eponymous novel published in 1818. Through the narrative of the relationship between a creature that aspired to become a god and humans who admired humanity, the musical prompts a reflection on human greed and the essence of life. Since its premiere in 2014, where it won awards in nine categories at The Musical Awards, Frankenstein has continued to set box office records each season.
Selected as the Best Musical in the musical category of the 2015 Korea Creative Content Agency`s Excellent Creator Discovery Support Project, Fan Letter depicts the historical anecdotes of literary figures, including the genius writers Yi Sang and Kim Yu-jeong, during the Japanese colonial period. This modern faction musical, blending historical facts with imagination, has been consistently sold out since its premiere in 2016. In 2018, it achieved success in Taiwan, becoming the first Korean original musical to fill a 2,000-seat theater, further solidifying its triumph internationally. br br
Maybe Happy Ending , hailed by both audiences and critics, tells the story of discarded helper bots, created to assist humans but rejected due to obsolescence, who find closeness and experience the emotions of love. Since its premiere in 2016, the musical has achieved legendary status in the realm of original Korean musicals, securing six awards at the 2nd Korean Musical Awards and expanding its reach to the United States, including an Atlanta trial, as well as Japan and China. br br
Based on Victor Hugo`s 1869 novel of the same name, The Man Who Laughs premiered in 2018 and shed light on the values of human dignity and equality in a society marked by severe class discrimination in 17th-century England. The production, which has garnered numerous awards in the musical category and received high praise not only for its music but also for its grand and sophisticated stage design, visuals, and costumes. br br
Korea`s original musicals are transcending domestic borders and making a mark in international markets. With diverse genres, themes, and high artistic quality, coupled with the fervent support of the Hallyu fandom, it is anticipated that Korean musicals will continue to grow significantly.
