Detail
Science and technology have not only improved the quality of life but are also essential to ushering in a bright, new future. Particularly in Korea, which suffers a woeful lack of natural resources, maximizing national competitiveness through science and technology (S&T) is critical. Established as the countrys first comprehensive research institute in 1966, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) has played a leading role in researching and developing S&T in Korea for the past five decades. KIST has developed in tandem with Koreas advancement. In the 1970s, KIST participated in the execution of the governments policies to foster the heavy and chemical industries, such as machinery, chemical, shipbuilding, and steel, and it was certainly instrumental in realizing the tremendous results. In the 1980s, KIST laid the foundation for a new economy by leading the development of advanced technologies including those for electronic communications and bio-engineering. Building on such experience, KIST, in the 1990s, played a pivotal role in reinforcing Koreas global competitive edge by focusing on the development of basic technology. KIST has, therefore, been a steadfast partner to Korea for its growth, and has served as the center of Koreas S&T while setting the standard for many government-funded research institutes. Having been so important to Koreas transformations and innovations over the last five decades, KIST continues to conduct research in many fields to bring a better tomorrow for all. The institutes core research areas include brain science/biomedical engineering for a healthy society; energy/environmental technology for a sustainable society; and material/system technology to help create new businesses. Through the development of technologies in these fields, KIST will continue to help Korea and domestic businesses stay at the vanguard of future changes, improve Koreas competitive edge in the world, and contribute to the happiness of mankind. Korea was once a small, weak country in Asia, but KIST helped it become a major player in the global economy. In the hope that KIST will grow as the center of global S&T research and help create a better future for all mankind, Korea Post is issuing stamps to commemorate its 50th anniversary.
