Detail
PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, a passionate stage for the disabled around the world, will be held for 10 days from March 9 to 18, 2018 in regions of PyeongChang, Gangneung and Jeongseon, Gangwon
Province, the Republic of Korea. Paralympics is a compound word derived from the words paralegia ,meaning waist-down paralysis, and Olympics but it now connotes the meaning parallel with equal participation
of athletes with varying disabilities. Paralympic games are classified into 6 disability categories (arms and legs, brain damage, intelligence, vision, wheelchair use, others) and level of impairment is defined so athletes of similar disabilities can compete against each other.
In PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, as many as 1,500 athletes from 50 countries will participate to compete in over 80 events in 6 sports. Alpine Skiing consists of downhill and slalom events for speeding
down a steep slope at high speed. Cross-Country Skiing is an event for gliding across a course on skis in the shortest possible timeframe. Biathlon is an event where athletes ski while they carry a gun on their back and fire at shooting ranges throughout the course. In
Ice Hockey , athletes with a physical impairment in the lower part of the body play ice hockey on a sled. Snowboarding is an event where athletes cross over obstacles through fast downhill and exciting chniques. Wheelchair Curling is an event where two teams consisting of four athletes score points by sliding a round, flat stone inside the house (target), and is often regarded as chess on ice. The emblem in five traditional colors of Korea expresses a peaceful and hopeful world where people of different nationalities and regions with and without
impairment, athletes, and spectators all gather together in friendship. The mascot Bandabi which took its motif from the Asiatic black bear is a warm-hearted character who is setting an example for equality and
harmony.
