Detail
Korea built artificial lakes around its four major rivers and use water for agricultural, industrial and tap water supply. Korea Post has selected four artificial lakes by voting on the 2020 Korea Philatelic Exhibition, and is issuing the commemorative stamp Beautiful Lakes capturing landscapes throughout the four seasons. Daecheongho Lake was constructed in 1980, and it stretches across Daejeon and Chungcheongbuk-do Province through Cheongju, Okcheon-gun and Boeun-gun. It serves as both the heart and veins for the Daejeon and Cheongju areas, providing water for household and industrial use. It retains 1.5 billion tonnes of water, the third largest in Korea, and is known for its scenic roads 200 to 300 meters above sea level with lush mountainside trees. Many migratory and resident birds flock here and you can easily see egrets during summer. Over the course of a three-hour drive around Daecheongho Lake, you can also check out nearby tourist attractions, such as Geumgang Recreation Area, Janggye Tourist Area, and Munui Cultural Heritage Complex. The midstream and downstream of the Seomgang River running through southwest Gangwon-do Province used to suffer flooding every year and see a lack of water during the dry season. To fix this problem, the government built a dam to block the valley, creating Hoengseongho Lake. Visitors to Hoengseong Dam Water Culture Hall will be reminded of the importance of water through various hands-on experience programs. National Mang-Hyang Cemetery in Junggum-ri at the end of Hoengseong Dam was established as a place to reflect on the past lives of people in flooded areas. Currently, the annual capacity of Hoengseong Dam is 111.6 million cubic meters, which not only prevents floods, but also generates and provides 104 GWh annual electric power. Yongdam Dam, which was built by submerging 1 eup and 5 myeons in Jinan-gun, Jeollabuk-do Province, was created to solve the issue of household tap water in Jeonju. It provides 1.35 million tonnes of water from the upstream of the Geumgang River. Yongdamho Lake established with this dam has emerged as a tourism attraction after a bridge was built to connect to the dam`s ring road. Roads that connect Yongdam Dam with Jeongcheon-myeon and Yongdam-myeon as well as Sangjeon-myeon and Ancheon-myeon harmonize with the lake`s landscape, making it a popular getaway destination for long drives. The nearby peculiar-looking Maisan Mountain and the 5-km-long Uniram Baniram Valley also attract many tourists for their breathtaking scenic views. Soyangho Lake, which was created with the construction of a multi-purpose dam in the Soyanggang River in October 1973, is the largest artificial lake in Korea. Nicknamed an “inland sea,” Soyang Lake serves as a key water resource for the Seoul metropolitan area flowing to the lower reaches of the Hangang River. Many anglers enjoy fishing in the valleys around the lake due to it being home to more than 50 species of freshwater fish, including mirror carp, trout, carp, eel and smelt. The scenery around the lake changes throughout the seasons, and many locals and tourists visit to enjoy the magnificent view of the beautiful lake and its scenery. Artificial lakes are invaluable as they provide water in a stable way and even serve as a getaway destination for people to seek rest. We hope this commemorative stamp capturing the seasonal views of the four artificial lakes in Korea vicariously helps you relax.
