Detail
Surrounded by water on three sides, South Korea boasts beautiful coastal sceneries by the East, West, and South Seas. In particular, many people drive out to coastal roads to enjoy the stunning seascapes. Korea Post is issuing the commemorative stamp Coastal Roads featuring its four selections of beautiful Korean coastal roads. Famous for its stunning sunset scenery, Baeksu Coastal Road along the West Sea in Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do Province is about 18.4 km long from Yeongsan Won Buddhism Sanctuary in Giryong-ri, Baeksu-eup, bypassing Gusu-ri and Daesin-ri, to Seokgumi Village in Baegam-ri. Driving down the road, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the sunset. There are eight parking lots from Baegam-ri to Gusu-ri so you can stop to take in the seascape. Baeksu Coastal Road was selected as one of the 100 Beautiful Roads by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs (MLTM), and was also awarded the Excellence Prize at the 1st Natural Scenery Awards of the Republic of Korea in 2011. Heonhwa-ro Road in Gangneung, which is known as the road closest to the sea in Korea, is considered to be the best driving course near the East Sea. The 2.4 km course from Geumjin Beach in Okgye-myeon, Gangneung through Simgok Port to the north and Jeongdongjin Port is the highlight of Heonhwa-ro Road where you can appreciate the sea of Gangwon-do Province in your car bypassing the low guardrails. The road was named Heonhwa-ro because the landscape around it is similar to that of Heonhwaga (The Flower Offering Song) listed in Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms. Recently, it became a mecca for surfers and there are now many surfing schools, accommodations and cafes nearby. You can have fun just by watching the surfers ride the waves. If you drive along Sinchang Windmill Coastal Road, located along the western tip of Jeju Island, you can see windmills in the offshore wind park standing along the road. Various things to watch will spread in front of you while driving along the winding road from the white windmills to the emerald-colored sea and the far-off Chagwido Island. You can discover a walking trail in an ecological experience park while driving down the road. Here, you can see a large fish statue, and enjoy the landscape at the rest area or even try out various experiences such as traditional Jeju-style fishing at Wondam Experience Center. When you cross the Samcheonpodaegyo Bridge and reach the Namhae, you can drive along Mulmi Coastal Road, which is about 20 km long from Mulgeon-ri to Mijo-ri. It is also called a “silk road embracing Hallyeohaesang” as the scenery with the winding road with flowers, autumn foliage, bizarre rocks, and the emerald-colored sea is gorgeous like silk. Mulmi Coastal Road, seen from above, is breathtakingly beautiful, and it was selected as one of the twelve scenic spots near the Namhae. In the middle of the road, there is the observatory from which you can enjoy the South Sea, so you can appreciate the green mountain and the blue sea conveniently. It is not easy to travel not only overseas but even within the country these days due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. We hope that this commemorative stamp featuring Korea`s beautiful coastal roads stretching along nature gives you the delight of going on a trip albeit vicariously.
