Detail
The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Namsan Public Library, the first public library in Seoul. In celebration, Korean Post is issuing the commemorative stamp 100th Anniversary of Namsan Public Library capturing Korea`s modern and contemporary history as well as its public library system. The March 1st Movement in 1919 spurred the resistance to coercive colonial rule in Korea and voices piped up to call for the establishment of a library to cultivate talented citizens. Accordingly, Hanseong Hospital in Myeong-dong was renovated and opened on October 5, 1922 as Gyeongseong Prefectural Library. As the place needed more space, Gyeongseong Prefectural Library was relocated in 1927 to Sogong-dong, which then served as Daegwanjeong (Yeongbingwan), a historical building that served as a guest house for foreigners, and after liberation, it was renamed as Namdaemun Library. Afterwards, it was relocated to the present newly-built site (Huam-dong) on January 27, 1965 to serve as the mecca for reading and literary culture until now. Namsan Public Library was designed by architect and professor Lee Hae-seong (7th president of Hanyang University), and it was designated as Seoul Future Heritage No. 49 in 2013 in recognition of its historic value. When Namsan Public Library was first opened to the public, it was the largest library in Korea as it had over 70,000 books and a seating capacity to accommodate 1,602 visitors. At a time when there were not as many public libraries as today, bibliophiles and students preparing for various exams filled every seat in Namsan Public Library. Today, Namsan Public Library has over 500,000 books and 16,000 non-book materials in five reading rooms throughout the five-story building. Also, some of the valuable books in the collection of Namsan Public Library were selected as tangible cultural heritage (three classic literature books) and registered cultural heritage of Seoul (30 pieces including Hangeul magazines published during the Korean Empire). Namsan Public Library also runs a wide variety of special programs, such as Korean Literature Collection, Reading Therapy, Namsan Literature Academy, and Namsan Writing Contest, as well as services designed to provide valuable materials such as the classics. In celebration of its 100th anniversary, Namsan Public Library has opened the “Digital Lounge” (2nd floor) under the slogan of “embracing citizens, embodying knowledge, and shaping the future,` and plans to provide new services to citizens, such as the “Valuable Literature Archives` (5th floor) that holds tomes of classic literature. The commemorative stamp captures the image of Namsan Public Library located next to N Seoul Tower under the blue sky. We hope this commemorative stamp serves as an opportunity to experience a wide variety of anniversary programs that Namsan Public Library has to offer, such as cultural events and special exhibitions.
