The Republic of Korea embarked on its space program with the first successful launch of its first satellite KITSAT-1 in 1992. Thirty years later in June 2022, it succeeded in launching KSLV-II (Nuri) that was developed based on its own technology, securing the technology of launch vehicles. Korea Post is issuing the commemorative stamp Successful Launch of Nuri to celebrate the great accomplishment of Korea`s space program. The development of Nuri began in 2010 with the aim of securing the capability of launching a 1.5-ton satellite into low orbit of 600-800 km above Earth. After an open call for public submissions, the launch vehicle was named “Nuri,” an archaic Korean word for “world,” signifying “a new world extending out to space.” Nuri is a three-stage space launch vehicle weighing 200-ton (Payload weight: 1,500 kg) and measures 47.2 m long. The first stage consists of four 75-ton liquid engines, the second stage one 75- ton liquid engine, and the third stage one 7-ton liquid engine. The first official launch of Nuri took place on Oct. 21, 2021 after the test launch vehicle was successfully launched on Nov. 28, 2018 to qualify the performance of the 75-ton liquid engine that will be installed in Nuri. The first launch was successful in the first stage separation, the pairing separation, the second separation, and the dummy satellite separation; however, it failed to place the dummy satellite into orbit. After correcting the flaws of the first launch, the second launch of Nuri was held on Jun. 21, 2022. Nuri’s performance verification satellite was put into orbit 875 seconds after the launch, and the dummy satellite 945 seconds after the launch, without a hitch. As the performance verification satellite communicates with the ground station successfully, Korea became one of seven countries with advanced space technology that can launch a multi-purpose satellite exceeding 1 ton on its own. The successful launch of Nuri is a feat that shows the hope and possibility that Korea is now able to pioneer into space. Nuri will be launched four times more from 2023 to 2027 according to Korea`s space program. The commemorative stamp features an image of Nuri lifting off from Launch Pad 2 at Naro Space Center in Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do. We hope this commemorative stamp serves as an opportunity to look back on the history of Korea`s space development with its accomplishment of indigenously-developed space rocket technology after 30 years of challenges.
