Detail
`Postal service is, needless to say, the necessity of public of any nation and eminently contributes to one`s cultural and social system. Above all it promotes and encourages peace and friendship among nations by linking all human beings in the world. Though it was rude and way different with the one in today, the history of Korean postal service gets back to the 9th year of King Soji, Sylla Dynasty (A.D. 478), that the courier system was first created in this country and that mail stations reserved for royal despatches were established in main points of high ways. As for modern postal system, the introduction was made to the last Kingdom in 1884, the 21st year of King Kozong, soon after the collapse of isolation policy. The system was organized by a young political leader, Yung Shik Hong, whose party advocated the enlightment in the wake of western hemisphere. Thus, the year of 1884 is remembered as the inauguration of the newly formed Post Office Department of the Kingdom and the first issuance of the Kingdom`s postage stamps in the value of 5; 10; 25; 100 Mun. respectively. This service was practically opened on November 18, 1884, and its ritual ceremony was taken on the 4th of December, same year. The department, favorite of the new tides of civilization era, was closed on December 8, same year, due to failure of the coup detat attempted against the conservative ruling party. However, encouraged by the undeniable trend of new era, the department was reopened at last on July 22, 1895. On January 1st, 1900, the Kingdom affiliated to the Universal Postal Union and the service became available to the world. On this significant event of the 80th anniversary of postal service, the 4th of December 1964, the Ministry issues two kinds of postage stamps as illustrated in this leaflet.`
