Detail
`The 4th December 1965 marks the 10th Communications Day. The said date was designated as Communications Day a decade ago for the purpose of giving impetus to sound development and improvement of the postal service capable of serving the general public with higher degree of efficiency in future. An event to commemorate the occasion is observed by the Ministry of Communications with various activities annually. Our social life stems, above all other things, from the communication of thought with others. Development of not only human culture and civilization but all other activities of the mankind are achieved through the exchange of thought among the people, in one way or another. The communication service as a medium of communication as such is the most important necessity in our daily life and it goes without saying that it is today contributing greatly to the development of human society. About 80 years ago, on the 4th December 1884, modern-type postal system was first introduced to Korea by Yong-sik Hong, then a leading member of the Reformist Party, with establishment of the Directorate General of Posts adopting a modern type organizational set-up. For the collection of postage, 5 different postage stamps, called Muni Stamps, were issued at the time. On the occasion of the 10th Communications Day, the Ministry of communications will issue diamond-shaped postage stamps for the first time in history, of two denominations to commemorate the day and at the same time wishing for the continued development of the communications service in Korea. October 24th, 1965 marks the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Organization. This international peace organization was set up in the interest of ensuring international peace and security through promotion of international friendship, economic, social, cultural and humanitarian cooperation so as never to let the mankind suffer again from the disaster of war. The U.N. is indeed the greatest international peace organization in reality as well as in name. It started with 51 member countries at the outset on October 24th, 1945 and with its increased membership to 117 countries today, it is contributing immeasurably towards promotion of social welfare and world peace for the benefit not only of those member countries but also those which are not members at the moment. The Republic of Korea acquired the international recognition on December 12th, 1946 and ever since applied formally for a membership over three occasions. Unfortunately, Korea`s admission has been turned down each time owing to the veto exercised persistently and abusively by the U.S.S.R. Korea, nevertheless remains all the same ever faithful to the spirits and authority of U.N. which pursues the peace and welfare of the mankind. The U.N. shall be forever remembered in our heart with gratitude for what it has done for Korea and as well as for other people throughout the world during the past twenty years. Especially, it was the help of powerful might and authority of U.N. that we could overcome the enemy in th Korean conflict provoked by the North Korean Communist invasion. In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of U.N. and at the same time in compliance with the U.N. Resolution No. 1907 (XVIII) of November 21st 1963 which designated 1965 as the year for international cooperation with the slogan ``Peace and progress through cooperation`` and wishing eternal world peace, the Ministry of Communications issues the commemorative stamps in two denominations.`
