Detail
`The life of Korean women up until some eighty years ago had been confined to their deeply secluded boudoirs according to the long tradition of feudalism. Not like men, women in those old days had no opportunity for any free and public education, not to speak of taking part in any social life. Modern ideas of education were first introduced into Korea in 1886 by American missionary Mrs. Mary F. Scranton when she started western style teaching with only one girl student at the outset. This served as a moment for opening a way towards gradual introduction of modern education system for women in Korea, taking foundation later in an institution called Ewha Hakdang (presently Ewha Womens University). To provide women with an opportunity for education is very important as part of the fundamental right granted to all citizens that all people share equal opportunity without any discrimination in all areas of human life. It is indeed important to extend protection of right of women that was often subject to oppression during the unhappy days, especially in the underdeveloped society, if true democratic way of living is to be realized. There should be no discrimination between men and women in an opportunity to participate in all social activities. After series of development during the past 80 years since the first introduction of modern ideas of education for women, today there are a great number of institutions for women from middle schools up to colleges, including Ewha Womens University which is a leading institution of its kind in the Orient and the symbol of freedom of education for women in Korea. Their continued development and improvement in quality as well as in number have been truely outstanding. The Ministry of Communications issues the postage stamp in commemorating this meaningful event of the 80th anniversary of introduction of modern education system for women in Korea and wishing their further success and progress in the field.`
