`On the 16th of May this year, we are to observe the 10th anniversary of the May 16 Revolution. For more than 10 years following the establishment of the government of the Republic of Korea, the people of this country were placed under the merciless dictatorial rule until the overthrow of the now defunct government of the Liberal Party through the April 19, 1960, student uprising. Political and social confusion continued to rampage even after the transfer of government following the Student, Uprising. At long last, a group of soldiers rose up resolutely to save the country from the ever-worsening crisis, at the dawn of May 16, 1961. A great turning point in the course of this young republic`s path was marked by the May 16 Revolution, opening the way of development wide open for our people who had long been wandering about in the quagmire of confusion and chaos, at the same time placing the nation on a firmer foundation. During the past 10 years since the May 16 Revolution, this republic has achieved remarkable progress and advancement in political, economic, diplomatic, military and all other fields of national endeavors. Thus, the Republic of Korea has by now become able to join the group of semi-advanced countries of the world, owing mainly to the successful implementation of the First Five-Year Economic Development Plan and to the Second Five-Year Plan which has almost been completed as successfully as the First Five-Year Plan. In observance of the 10th anniversary of the May 16 Revolution, which has played a decisive role in bringing about such remarkable progress of the country as mentioned above, the Ministry of Communications is to release a commemorative postage stamp to renew the firm determination of our entire people to continue the nationwide march forward toward the eventual achievement of territorial reunification and prosperity of our fatherland.`
